Over the last decade, an increasing number of prescription drugs—including life-saving and life-sustaining drugs—have been in short supply. If drug shortages prevent health care providers and patients from accessing essential medications, the consequences can include prolonged illness, permanent injury, and even death. GAO examined recent drug shortages and the progress the Food and Drug Administration has made in addressing them.
